Paul asks…
How can I…..?
Move out on good terms with my mother? She thinks I’m so unrealistic and naive. I graduated hs at 16 (managed to squeeze my way into the harsh world of rock journalism as I traveled and wrote articles for a large record company) and graduated beauty school a month after I turned 17. I’ve had two jobs for as long as I can remember, and yet I’m still a failure to her. I’m moving from FL to Chicago in November where I will start college and get a job in a salon. And yet she laughs every time I mention it. She constantly has negative comments and it tares me apart. She thinks I believe life will be such a breeze away from home. I know things will be different, but not a major struggle, I’ve been paying my bills for the past two and a half years (phone, car payments, medical, medicines, groceries, gas, beauty school tuition, etc). I just need her support. I know in life the only support system you have to count on is yourself, but I just…need her to understand why I need to leave.
Help?

Dennis Carter answers:
She may just be trying to hold on to her baby.
You sound well grounded to me. Something any mother should be proud of. But, the thought of losing you may be too hard on her. She may even be secretly hoping you fail just so you will come back home. Who knows? Just a thought.

Susan asks…
How can I pull this off…?
Okay, so this didn’t happen recently, but I just now thought to ask a question about it.
My dad used to work for a company in Urbandale, and he had a non-compete agreement with his boss.
His boss was totally ripping him off so he had to quit. (That part was obvious.) But because of the agreement, now he had to move all the way to Chicago and get a job there!!! And he has to stay there for 2 years!!!
I’m only 13 and I really feel like this is a part of my childhood that will be gone forever.
But would I be right in saying that if I put his old company out of business, he could come back?
Just tell me if I’m wrong about that last part.
But, if I’m right then how can I do that?
Or is there something else I could do?
If so, what?
Thanks!
(Sympathy is welcome too. But if you’re going to say, “deal with it”, then be prepared to have anything you’ve ever written reported!)

Dennis Carter answers:
Kid, let me tell you something no one else will say: god bless you for wanting to put that greedy company out of business. I am sorry about your dad, my pops died when i was 7 and i never got over it (ill be 22 next month) if you can figure out a legal way to put them out of business more power to you, keep thinking like this because it’s ideas like that one that change the world for the better. I dont know if them going out of business will let your dad come back from Chicago or not but i’m sure it’ll make you feel better and make your dad very proud of you. If he cant come back until the two years is up speak to your family about doing some odd jobs around the house for extra money so you can buy some long distance calling cards (they’re like $5 – $10 each) so you can at least stay in touch w/ your dad often. Good luck.

Lizzie asks…
Should I go to Loyola University Chicago or UIC for my undergraduate business degree?
I know Businessweek ranks Loyola’s undergrad business program as 103 and UIC’s program as 105. There’s not much difference between the two but Loyola is two ranks higher. But I believe it’s also more expensive than UIC. I’m sure companies would look at Loyola more than UIC. But my case is a little different. After I get my bachelors, I am immediately moving to Sydney, Australia and will be living with my cousin. I will already start searching for jobs before I go to Sydney. Will it really matter if I go to Loyola or UIC for my bachelors then? Won’t employers in Australia treat Loyola and UIC degrees the same and hire me if I am the right candidate? Because If I am right, then I should just go to UIC and not waste money on Loyola. Please help me out guys!!
Oh sorry, and I’m transferring from William Rainey Harper Community College to one of these schools (Loyola, UIC)

Dennis Carter answers:
I don’t know how many Australians that have lived in Chicago will read this question, so our guess is as good as yours. My guess is that the Catholic/Private label will carry some weight in AUS, especially compared to the public institution label. Now, the question you need to ask is: Is this difference great enough to justify the cost difference?” My answer: probably not.
I’d go with UIC in this case.

David asks…
As a single mother raising two kids without child support could I owe alimony?
My soon to be ex wants alimony; I’ve had two attorneys and cannot seem to get a straight answer as to whether he has a case. We separated after nine years of marriage. We had two children together who are now eight and four years old. I wanted the divorce largely because I could not convince him to work full time.
We split in August 2010. At that time he chose to abandon his part time job and was fired for job abandonment. He had the option of going full time employment with the company but chose to move out of state, eight hours from our kids. He is now working sporadically while pursuing a comedy career. I have full custody of the kids; he has not seen them since September 2010.
I work full time from home as my youngest is Autistic. I worked in downtown Chicago but took a work from home position to accommodate some of the educational needs.
Here is the dollars and sense of it, he made around $18,000 a year part time and I made around $70,000. In my eyes that $70,000 is ok money for a single person but I am raising two children 100% on my own, he is not paying any support. I pay housing, daycare, medical expenses, and school clothes, not to mention lots of money to lawyers trying to avoid paying another dependent.
Lastly, I never finished college so I do not have a degree. My soon to be ex has an associate’s degree, 15 years of customer service experience, supervisory and management experience, computer skills, telephone skills, has held insurance and investment licenses and is capable of working. Since he moved of state he has no child-rearing responsibilities, nothing like raising children or maintaining a home keeping him from working.
I welcome any feedback, even reasons why I should pay alimony.
I understand people have been ordered to pay a custodial parent child support and alimony. However, In my situation I am the custodial parent. I understand women who raise children sometimes get alimony and child support in order to care for the children, my ex does is not caring for children or disabled.

Dennis Carter answers:
Your attorneys cannot give you a straight answer because there is no straight answer.
A judge is granted a lot of discretion when deciding whether to award alimony.
State statutes usually specify perhaps a dozen different factors that a judge should consider when deciding whether to award alimony, and how much should be awarded. There is no set bright line criteria.
Common factors in most states include things like:
Length of marriage.
Respective Spouse’s earning capacity
Education level of the spouses
Obligations of each spouse
The ability to pay spousal support
The ability of the supported spouse to secure gainful employment
But, everything you mentioned will be considered by the judge when deciding whether it is fair for you to pay alimony, and whether it is fair that ex should receive alimony.

Paul asks…
What kind of experience should I gain if I’m looking into getting my MBA in health-care?
I graduated with an undergraduate degree in Accounting and Finance. I’ve worked for a big financial company for a year but recently left since I’ve moved to Chicago. Now I have job offer for a Technical Institute which I plan on taking. However, my long term goal is to get an MBA in Health-Care. I was thinking is there anything part-time I could do to gain some experience in Health Care so when I look for a job after my MBA it would be beneficial? Would care-giver job experience help? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks!

Dennis Carter answers:
Try working in the billing department of a major hospital, I know Chicago has a lot of them.

flying out for an interview?
i’m in the middle of a long distance job search, and after two interviews, the company has offered to fly me out (i’m in boston. they are in chicago) to interview. the individual i last interviewed with was the person who called me today. her words were “we would love to fly you out for a day next week so we can meet in person. i will have my assistant get in touch with you to arrange the details.”
great!
i have an etiquette question. as i’ll be moving to chicago in june (i’m not assuming i have this job in the bag. but i’m going either way). i do need to look at apartments, so of course i’d love to take the opportunity to do that when i go out next week for the interview. i can stay at my boyfriend’s apartment.
now, when the assistant contacts me, is it appropriate to ask that my return flight be scheduled for a later day? can i say, “i’m so happy to be coming out to chicago, and i would love to take advantage of this trip and look for apartments during my visit. is it
possible for my return flight to be scheduled for a few days later? i am not in need of accommodations.”
is that appropriate? how would you word this?

Dennis Carter answers:
I think it’s appropriate, and i think you stated it quite well. I would suggest you ask over the phone instead of in print. You can explain it easier that way, and they won’t misunderstand you.

and if so, is that how you would word the request?

Dennis Carter answers:
I wouldn’t mention that you’ll be apartment hunting. It would just sound presumptious.
Just say you’d love to stay an extra day or so, if that’s ok and doesn’t make a difference in ticket prices for them. Also mention you don’t need accommodation.

Donna asks…
Should I move to a different country for a new life?
I’m a reporter living in Sydney and am just really unhappy with my life.
I don’t speak to either of my parents who live in sydney and just feel stuck here.
I feel like I’m drifting apart from a lot of my friends and I can’t relate to a lot of people here.
I have qualifications in television as I have done some work for a TV network and my dream job is to work on the Oprah show. Should I apply for a job there and move to Chicago if I get it?
This is not a stupid question – I have worked for big news companies in Australia so I think I would actually have a chance at the job. (I’m 25)

Dennis Carter answers:
You can try for it, love.
If you think you can go for it, and that it will make you happy, then try for it. The worst that can happen is you get turned down and get to find a new opportunity that you were probably fated to take.
Just remember though, America is in recession. I know a lot of my Canadian buddies that have tried to get work there have gotten rejected because the government doesn’t want to grant a whole lot of work visas. Also, American based companies are getting a lot of complaints within about hiring people who aren’t American because of rising unemployment. One of my friends was actually fired from his job because the company needed to cut jobs…and he didn’t have citizenship. But who knows, it might be different in your field.
It’s most of the reason why I have stayed in Canada…it didn’t used to be this way.
But yes…it can’t hurt to try. Just don’t be afraid of failure either. Take all of the good and bad in stride.

abandoned adjustment of status application?
i had came here in the US on spring of 04 with a valid visitor visa. before that time i have a girlfriend that is in chicago. we met in L.A.planned to get married a month after. we live together for several months and have started on the adjustment application. january of 05 she planned to move back to chicago since she cannot get a decent job over here. we argued a lot and start to fight. until she left me and went back to her’s parents place. now im stuck alone. trying to get her to come back. i have receive my EAD valid for 1 year which was expired on december of the same year. now im out of status. still working on the same company. january of 06 i started to get summons from the court about a divorce that my wife had started which end up as annulment due to fraud and force.i talked to her like apr 07 just to get a copy. we have been in good spirits now. what can i do? now i got a fiance’ who is just an LPR. am i a criminal?i can go back to where iv been but i got an ailing father
my father is in my home country that i send money to his health. i know i have commited offenses whether it is civil or criminal. is there any chance if my LPR becomes citizen and petition me? if so, will the history of my annulment (based on Fraud and force )from my ex- wife be a big issue on my application if i oudl apply. some of you might think that we did that marriage for immigration benefits but we dont. we have entered it in good faith. i knew all her relatives friends and i always get along with my ex mother in law if that would help. please help. i am tired of hiding in the shadow and want to make it correct. please no harsh or racist answers. or should i just leave the country.
ps. im paying my taxes, abading all the laws of the US. but i am an illegal.

Dennis Carter answers:
From my understanding, if you’re out of status, you can still marry a us citizen person and still submit an adjustment of status application..you may pay a fine for being out of status when you submit the application…now i am not sure about your previous marriage…i guess you have to make sure that you are really divorced before you submit any application. Now i would not do this alone…make sure you have a lawyer to help you do this…a lot of out of status people do get marry to be in status….good luck!

I have received your email regarding the 2003 Honda Accord EX with only 80,145 miles. The car is located in Sharon, MA at the shipping company. The car is in perfect condition, with no scratches on it,no damage, clear title. The engine is a 4 Cylinder 2.4 liter. The transmission is automatic. The price for the car is $2,800 with shipping included. The car was my husband`s as he loved it very much, but he did not enjoy it as he died in a IRAQ 3 month ago. It brings very bad memories to me, I want to get rid of it.The buyer will receive the car with all papers and receipts that he needs to register it to his name.Shipping will be done whit DAS and it will take no more then 2-3 days. I have a friend there who will manage me a low price shipping and I assumed that it is my duty to pay for shipping it.It will be delivered directly to your address.Anyway, I have to let you know that I want a fast deal so if you are really interested in buying it,please reply with the following information’s:
-Your full name;
-Your shipping address.(street,city,state,zip code)
The transaction will close only through eBay so we both will be protected.
I want eBay because as they are the biggest company on the internet I think that we can close this deal fast and safe for both of us. Also I am not very familiar with the internet transactions and eBay is the only one I know.I will look for your email,so that we can move forward with this deal!
Let me know.
P.S I attached you some pictures with the car,

Dennis Carter answers:
This is a scam you have to beware of people trying to sell you things by only contacting you through email and trying to have wire transactions for the money such as through eBay. He also doesn’t want to show you the car in person and wants to ship it to you. This is definitely a scam.

Would the police force me to get on a plane to go back to my parents if I decided to stay in another country?
Last year my family moved from Chicago to Sydney, Australia for my dad’s job and I am totally miserable here. His company gives him tickets for us to fly back home to be with our family & friends, and I just convinced them to let me go before school starts up. My aunt invited me to live with her, and my coach on my cheerleading squad said she’d give me my spot, so I’d be able to resume my life there. I was a straight-A student and very happy in Chicago. I’m 16 and going into my junior year and my parents want me to stay with them until I graduate in 2011. I will seriously go insane by then because I hate it here that bad. I am an American citizen. If I go to Chicago and then just don’t get back on the plane to come back to Sydney, do my parents have the right to force me to return? Would they have to fly all the way over to Chicago just to get me? Would the police like make me get onto a plane to go home?
Yesterday a girl asked a question similer to mine about her friend who is 17 and wanting to just not come home from China.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Al6GGPPqussU3PphPQ7MEXfty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090806232227AAh7qJv
Could she really stay in China? I’m just wondering.

Dennis Carter answers:
At sixteen, you are a minor child, and you have to live where your parents direct you to live, unless you are being abused, then the court can step in and act in place of your parent. So…here you are, a chance of a lifetime to experience a different culture, make new friends etc, and you are s000—00 unhappy. Yes, it is hard to make changes, but bite the bullet here, you will be way more mature at the other end, and the school system in Aussie land is better than in the US> Sounds like you have a lot that you could contribute to other people’s experience, Go for it, and get a good tan at the same time. Good luck

I want to move to the USA?
i currently live in Melbourne Australia. I am only 14 but once i finish school and do my apprenticeship i want to move to Chicago. I am aware that i will need to be working and living in the states for a certain amount of years but how would i go about getting a work Visa. I was thinking could i go over for a holiday and do a bit of job searching. Then could i find a building company that would be willing top sponsor me and could i apply for citizenship that way. I wan to get in as easy as possible (legally). Is it worth the effort. How would i get a citizenship. Does it help that i’m Australian and both countries have pretty strong ties. Thanks.
Once i finish high school can i go over and learn building over in Chicago. What visa do i need please explain more and in more detail.

Is La Rosa Del Monte moving company in Miami good?
Like to use it to move to Puerto Rico from Miami. Theu gave a really good Price. BBB rate is B. Some bad stories online. Internation moving company Association member. Anyone has experiences with them. They told me I have to wait 4 weeks. They will put 2-3 customers’ stuffs in the same container. That’s why they have a good price.
Can I trust La Rosa Del Monte?

Dennis Carter answers:
I live in Philadelphia. There is a Rosa del Monte here. I have used them a few times to ship things to PR. They always are good to me. Sometimes it takes long to get there if u send it on the ship, but it is cheap that way. It might actually take over 4 weeks. My stuff has always arrived safely.

How would you rate Seaview Industries, a Miami, Fla. shutter company at 4595 NW 37th Court?
How long did it take to get your hurricane shutters installed from the time of contract signing? Was the work satisfactory? Did you have to be persistent to move the project along?

Dennis Carter answers:
Signed in March, promised for 1st Week of June. Aug 24 1/2 of order ready and no ETA available for balance of order. Very hard to get a call returned from this company. They have used every excuse in the book.

I like to know some major companies in Miami area & outside the area. Where the plenty of jobs. Do you know?
any job fair coming up or how can I get a list of company job hotlines in the area. I’m not in Miami now. I never been there but plan on moving there in the near future.

Dennis Carter answers:
The economy is not that great right now. It is really hard to get a job in south Florida, especially Miami. Many companies are going through a hiring freeze and only hiring very basic low paying positions. You best bet is to peruse the Internet to see what is out there. It appears everything is practically commission based.

Michael asks…
Landlord is shady light company? Can I break my lease?
I moved into a new Chicago apartment in November and when I tried to have my lights connected in my name I was told that my building does not exist. Apparently my building was rehabbed and the owner removed the old meters and when he put the new one in he did not register them. So now according to the light company my building is no where on their grid. I was told to call my landlord and ask him to call an inspector out. When I did he said the light company tells that to everyone and that he has had “problems” with this before and would call them. Three time I have call the light company and three times I was told the same thing “Your building is not on are grid. Call your landlord” When I try to tell then about my landlord they say he needs to call not me. So I was wondering can I break my lease and move because I don’t want to get a light bill six months from now for a $1000 or be without lights because of my landlord didn’t do his job.
In my lease I’m to pay for cooking gas and lights only. My landlord is to pay everything else.
The lights are on in the building and in my apartment but I want to do the right thing and be billed correctly. I don’t need any trouble with the light company because I knew what was going on and did nothing. The blow back and karma from this is going to be hell and I want my hands clean!

Dennis Carter answers:
So have him call.
This would not break your lease, unless it is clearly stated on it.
I would be freaking ecstatic if my power bill for 6 months was 1000!

I’m currently training for a call center and though I love the work I want to move a way from the call center industry. Should I go for this job because it will get me to Chicago (oh…did I mention i really REALLY want to live in Chicago) or should I wait for a better opening in an indusrty outside of the call center world. If anyone works for Comcast can you give me some insight to the company or their experiences that would be helpful. Thanks!

I work for Comcast as a call center manager. They are not bad benefis like free basic digital cable, free phone and, high speed internet they also have the right to move with in the company. I started in installation.

Help. I must know if this is a Craigslist scam!!!! Can you tell me?
hi. im in Virginia and i was looking through craigslist and found an ad for a vehicle. i emailed the man and he sent me one back. this is what it is and i really need to know if it is a scam and if not what are his intentions with my address and full name. what does he mean that he needs them for eBay?
email:
The car is located in Chicago at the shipping company (i just moved here with my new job),we will use eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection,so we can both be protected and insured. The price for the car is $3500 with shipping included. I just need your full name and full address so i can forward them to eBay and they will contact you with the invoice in which you`ll see how to make this transaction.I will take care of it and i will send the car with all the papers( vehicle registration, warranty papers, transfer papers etc ) i am just waiting your full name and address to complete the shipping papers and start the delivery process. You will have 7 days to inspect the car and test drive it,take it to a mechanic, and in case you are not satisfied with the condition of the car(not your case), it will be shipped back on my expenses.
will eBay invoice me. how will they do that? cant i just make an eBay account and then we do it over eBay motors somehow? i just need to know if this is a scam or not

Dennis Carter answers:
Avoid this like poison. It is a scam. Ebay doesn’t invoice you for anything unless you have won an auction or done a Buy It Now. A seller has to complete whatever transaction between the both of you. Then an invoice would be generated through eBay. They do not mention how you will pay for the vehicle. You do not pay eBay for anything because they do not accept money, but Pay Pal will. And what does this guy need eBay for if he is advertising it on Craigslist anyway? He doesn’t as he could go directly through PayPal and generate you an invoice through them.

Dennis Carter answers:
I live in Chicago and generally speaking there are hundreds of companies that would be good to work for. However, if you do not have your connections getting a great job can be a huge challenge and can take years to come by. No good job comes easy to you out here. You have to network your azz off to work at one of these big companies, remember it’s not what you know but who you know. Personally I love this city and I want to live here forever. There are a lot of cool neighborhoods to live in such as Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, Bronzeville, and so much more (the north side is the best!).

If you agree with these terms and you have the money, send me your full name, telephone number and the address where you want the car to be delivered and I will initiate the transaction with eBay. You will receive all the transaction details from them.
SCAM OR NOT?!

Dennis Carter answers:
ALL OFFERS TO SHIP CARS ARE ONE HUNDRED PERCENT FRAUDULENT, this is on craigslist too, this is a scam it would have cost them more to ship the car, than its worth. SCAM SCAM SCAM sorry man you will lose your money.

James asks…
Was I Wrong to DECLINE the Job offer?
Before judging, please read my entire question.
I am 30 years old and live at home with my dear, sweet parents. I have been there for four months now, ever since I quit my job with Disney Cruise Lines. I just didn’t care for the position. As it stands, I told them over coffee when I first settled in that I would not leave their house until a job called offering me $100,000 a year. Hell I see plenty of rich, snotty girls downtown with major bank buying what they want and it makes me so jealous. I doubt these office women worked hard to where they got- Daddy’s connections surely got them placed (I mean, explain all the women who are “smart” at work but dumb when they’re in bars or out in clubs). No, I’m a very respectful and reserved social person, and I should be making more money.
Anyways I have a BA and tons of work experience- writing for papers, fact checking, entertainment performing, singing, program development- you know, the works. No one was calling me for a job and I was starting to get desperate. Even desperate enough to start demanding $95,000 instead of $100,000. Then the phone rang! It was a employment company I had applied for asking me to come in and interview for a content writing position. I was ecstatic. I borrowed my mom’s lipstick to doll up as they say, got in a dress with flowers on it, and waltzed out of the door like I owned Chicago.
After the interview, the lady was very impressed and then asked me about my salary requirements. This was it- the big question. I cleared my throat, took a sip of my Starbuck’s coffee (they did allow me to drink it there), and said “I won’t settle for less then $100,000.” I smiled confidently, knowing I had made the right decision.
The lady laughed a bit, and then told me they could only get me going in the mid 40s range. “Like $40,000? That’s it?” I asked. The lady was patient, telling me she valued my experience and encouraged me to try it since they needed someone with my skills and I could move up easily. I wasn’t listening anymore though, as I got up and put on my V-kneck coat.
“Look honey. You give me a ring when you’re ready to give me $100,000 a year plus three days off a week. I don’t work Fridays. Other then that- I have parents who support my career decisions and also give me a place to sleep. Peace out.”
The woman seemed shocked but then shrugged as I walked out and said good by to the secretary. I knew I had made the right choice- and I could always call the company back. There were some other people dressed up in suits waiting in chairs by the office I interviewed. Who could they be, I thought. Probably employees taking a break when they should be at their desks. Lazy jerks.
When I got home I was beaming. I actually had been offered a job and turned it down! My mother and father were eating dinner and seemed happy that I was happy.
“How did the interview go?” My mother seemed anxious.
“Well, they offered me the job for $45,000 a year…” I began. My parents interrupted with cheers and hoots. My mom gave me a hug and then asked when I thought I would start so I could begin looking for an apartment. I interrupted them back.
“I declined it. I told them I wouldn’t work for less then $100,000. Remember, we had this discussion. Now can I borrow $20 for dinner tonight? I’m broke since I don’t have a job right now.”
But my parents were not so understanding. My mother blew up- calling me a lazy leech who was a fool to decline such a great offer in this economy. My father told me to leave his presence, and that they would decide what to do with me later. I couldn’t believe it! I tried reasoning with them- telling them that as long as they don’t charge me rent, food, cable or phone, I would do my part in helping out too- like answering the home phone and taking messages, and locking the door for them when they went to work in the morning- If I was up yet. They didn’t seem to think that was enough. I was so upset I cried in my pillow until 2am, and then had some half gallon ice cream and watched “I Love Lucy” to cheer myself up. The next morning I slept until 3pm, so I wasn’t able to lock the door behind my parents. When the phone rang I ignored it. That’s what those barbarians get for not supporting my life choices. The job refused to pay what I was worth. I wrote my parents a hand written letter saying in summary that until I was offered $100K I would remain in their home. The latest update is my parents refuse to speak to me and have given me a 30 day notice to leave or they will take higher action. What can they do? I’m their daughter.
Advice on this?

Dennis Carter answers:
Have you looked at indeed.com? It’s a website that pulls job postings from other sites – like monster, careerbuilder, your local newspaper, and I’m not even sure what else. It doesn’t cover everything but it covers a lot. I like that you can put in search words to narrow down your focus and can even narrow down within a physical range – such as within 5 miles of a zip code. You should be able to see what’s available that interests you and salary ranges are listed on the left hand column.
In this economy, some jobs are paying less because they know they have a choice between well qualified people. But frankly, I don’t see anything you’ve listed that makes you worth $100k to an employer.
I’m feeling you are pulling our leg with your story; at least for your sake I hope so.

Try looking in careerbuilder.com and look for jobs in chicago. Yes, Chicago is a really nice place to live in. Except our winter’s arive too early and it gets pretty cold all the way up till march and early april. Other than that Chicago is the best. Hurry up and get up here. Downtown have a lot of sky rise apartments with a great lake view. Come and see for yourself.

Mary asks…
How do you tell your family your moving far away?
I’m from Chicago and I recently got a job in FL. I’m going to be graduating from college this spring and I start the job in early June. My friend who graduated last year got a job at the same company and got me in and were going to room together save on some costs. My brother is having his first child being born in May. I know this will be hard on my and my family. But I’m a biology major and in order to get the job I want I need some work experience. This job in FL will really help. I only plan on working here for 2 or 3 years. But I’m just worried that I will either like it down here, find a job that I want down here, or find a girl down here and not want to leave. My family still thinks that I’m going to stay around Chicago. How do I tell them I’m moving to FL this June? I know my grandma is going to take it the hardest and my parents are going to try and lay the guilt trip about me not seeing my nephew. How should I go about doing this?

Dennis Carter answers:
I would just come right out and tell your family that you got a job in Florida and will be moving down there in June. Your parents probably already realize that after college, life might take you away from Chicago. My parents came to that realization after I graduated and decided to stay in Massachusetts rather than moving back to NJ. Your family will miss you but you have to go and do what will make you happy.

Mandy asks…
Should i travel to the chicago ?
I am from egypt working at a multinational firm have a stable life and my fiance is american
I am an accountant who passed CPA exam at 2003 but dont have license to work at the usa and have 10 years of experiance in multinational firms
after i had my visa to travel to the us after long time of waiting . i had a problem moving with my company to the states
is it wise for me to go and look for job in the US under these financial crisis ?
or shall i call her to come to live in egypt at least here i have my good job ?

Dennis Carter answers:
Well either way it’s a risk your going to have to take. I would advise tough that before you move to the states you should have a job and be happy with the salary. If not, ask your girlfriend if she wants to go to Egypt.
