Lets Talk Furniture Moving Company New York

      Sharon asks…

I am moving from long Island New York to Washington DC?

I can’t decide whether I should find a moving company or do it by myself (female). I have a car. I don’t have a lot of big furniture. If I decide to do it by myself, I am worry about driving because I am from other country and I don’t have good sense of direction. what should I do? Any suggestions?

      Dennis Carter answers:

My family and i moved from Queens, NY to Fort Washington, MD (if DC was apart of Maryland the county i live in would be like a suburb. You’ll understand better once you live here.) So I can sympathize with what your going through. We had enough people to just rent a “U-Haul” truck and move everything by ourselves. Or maybe you could pay a moving company if you have the money since all you’ll really end up doing is boxing and then un-boxing all your stuff.

When it comes to the sense of direction, you should try to get some directions online. I prefer Google maps over Mapquest but driving to DC from NY isn’t that difficult. Its pretty much a straight shot south on I95. You come out of NY, into NJ, into DE, into MD, and then your in DC. Only tricky part is finding your way through DC because that gets difficult when you don’t know your way around. (online directions may soon be your friend, or you could maybe invest in a navigation system. Those things are awesome and fairly simple to use.)

      Susan asks…

How do you choose a moving service in NYC?

Hi, I own a start-up moving company in New York City, www.anytimemovingny.com and offer several services. I do have over 5 years experience doing moving and furniture assembly jobs and been through many scenarios. Most of my customers have been a joy to work with and I forged many great relationships, learned a lot and shared a lot of conversation.

For the majority of the time I accommodate evening hours, last minute calls and endured my share of walk ups – possibly I walked up over 200 flights of stairs since I been doing this, seen all types of furniture and met some peculiar characters. Even did a job for a member of the British Royal family and she wasn’t a snob she was real cool but did have an usually large amount of luggage for one person – that was unbelievable.

This past June Brooklyn 12 news did a story about a unique service that I do offer. That was cool the phone rang off the hook after wards but I didn’t freak just remained proactive.

We done moves ranging from room to room(furniture rearrangement),apt to apt, and house to house. We use vans, 10 foot trucks 16 foot trucks and 24 footers with lift gates.

I have 2 main people I work with and some times use day laborers that I have used consistently depending on the season or size the job. Past customers range from friends, complete strangers – referrals, and businesses. Some are listed on my website but needs to be updated.

Now, 90% of the time I’m at the site and deal with the customer I gave the quote to first hand. The famous line I hear is that “I don’t have a lot of stuff” or “this is an easy job” when I arrive sometime it is but most of the time it isn’t.. Those terms mean one thing to the movers and another to moving company.

So, basically I would like feedback from you and what makes you choose a moving service especially at the last minute? Is it price, availability or a combination of things? What do you expect? If we scratch – say a old dresser or something like that – what do you expect as compensation?

I want to know because I enjoy and prefer to run my own business and plan to do so for a long time and would like to improve our service by addressing the needs of actual potential customers rather than guessing. I’m up for the task.

Our goals include building a positive brand and possibly becoming a franchise while keeping the customer in mind 100% of the time.

Outside of doing moving jobs I am musician, music producer, and audio engineer that has a strong sense of family , loyalty and dedication. Thanks for your time.

statute of limitations in NY for damage claim?

A moving company broke my antique stained glass window while moving furniture. It took me some time to find an artisan who could properly restore the window. Now that I have done so I tried to file a claim with the moving company, but they told me I was calling beyond the statute of limitations. It has been one year and two months. Are they telling me the truth or can I still file a claim? This is in New York. Thanks for any help!

      Dennis Carter answers:

They will tell you whatever benefits them. You can call a lawyer for more information, but in order to proceed with a court case you will need before and after pictures and appraisals of the items before the damage. Usually a lawyer will give you free advice on whether or not you can file suit.

      David asks…

      moving to puerto rico?

My mother recently moved to Puerto Rico and wants to bring her furniture from New York. She has about a room’s worth of furniture: a bed; dresser; 2 TVs; a radio and some clothes. She now lives in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico which is on the west side of the Island. Anyone know any good moving companies or alternate ways of getting her furniture to Puerto Rico? Some of her furniture is new and she doesn’t want to buy it again in Puerto Rico. If anyone has had previous experience with such a move please contact me.
      thank you

      Laura asks…

Enough to move to New York City?

I’ve just graduated college in June with a BA in Computer Science and Mathematics. For the past few months, i’ve been searching for jobs, to no avail. Now, my uncle hooked me up with my first job that is with a tech company. It is based in New York City, and the starting salary is $55,000. Is this enough to live in the outer boroughs? I really need this opportunity, and I have some relatives that are on the east coast. I’m planning on sharing a room until I get some raises on my salary, but can I afford a little studio for myself? I’m selling my car and furniture, and collecting my savings, which will give me around $10000. Can I afford a little 1 bedroom studio (Probably in Brooklyn or some outer borough?). Do you think I’m ready? I plan to use the subway.

      Dennis Carter answers:

My daughter just did the same thing…she sold her car, (that I bought her) and went out there on her own. The plans she had to get an apt. With her friend fell through so she shopped for a sub lease, and after moving about for 4 months, finally has found one (she was there before but had to leave, it was only for 2 months at first)…but now she has it with another girl (the lessee) and she will pay 700 a month.
Food is ridiculously exp. As is everything else.
She says a two week pass on the Subway is the best deal. She uses it daily and multiple times, it’s a deal.

You sound like you have really though this through, she doesn’t make nearly as much as you but has a couple of jobs that pay pretty good.

She is a starving actress, ie; works for a couple caterers. She lives in Astoria, which she likes.

Go for it, but be patient with the city. It takes time. Good luck to you.

Moving to Pembroke Pines Fl From NYC with car, cat & kid HELP!?

      Hello!

Both my husband and I are transfering our jobs to Florida and moving from Astoria New york. I am trying to make it as smooth and easy as possible. We have 2 cars that we would prefer not to drive (they wouldn’t realy fit much anyways with all of us in it) 1 adorable pet cat (no he can’t be left behind!) and our beautiful 4 year old daughter.

What would be the best way to cordinate the move? Does any one know any companies?
We are only taking 1 TV set, a few boxes nothing major, no furniture and the cars of course
What we would prefer to do is send the cars and boxes together and fly to florida.

Any ideas on how to begin? What companies to go to?
      Ummm…I’m moving…that’s not the question at hand…

      Dennis Carter answers:

Take a look at this website:

      http://www.autodriveaway.com/default.aspx

Many years ago I did this a couple of times as a driver. What that means is after they check you out you pay a deposit and then drive someone’s car to the destination they want it to get to. As a vehicle owner, you’d pay the company to relocate your cars and they’d find someone to drive them to Florida.

You can keep whatever you want in the car… One of the cars I drove (from Ohio to Florida, if I remember correctly) had the trunk completely full with luggage, golf clubs, etc. — I was disappointed because I couldn’t use it, but the point ist hat if you want to put a couple of boxes of your stuff in one or both cars, that will also be delivered for you with no additional expense.

Like I said, I did this a long time ago so wasn’t even sure that the company was still around… But it’s something worth looking into in your situation.

      Ken asks…

im moving soon and i need some advice?

i asked this question before but didn’t give enough information. im in upstate new york and im going to be moving to tampa in july or august hopefully. i need information on movers and whats the safest way to get there. i have a lot of furniture right now but, everybody says just sell it and buy new stuff when you move. i would put that into consideration but whats the best way to sell it and what company or how do i sell it im new to this.i will keep my bed and my sons bed and maybe the antics and lil stuff i have. whats the best rental trucks and what is there pricings. my mom and dad want to drive down there. so if you can give me any information i would appreciate it so much and thaank you to eeryone who is answering my question and helping me out im thankful

      Dennis Carter answers:

As far as the selling it portion, if you have a lot of furniture that is worth quite a bit I’d keep it.

The moving companies I’d try the large compaines first to get prices, Atlas, United, Mayflower, etc. And, I would also check out some local movers to see what they charge. [ Check the BBB and google them first before you decide]

Rental Trucks- I would check the prices of U-Haul, Penske, & Budget. The compaines with the largest amount of the newer trucks I would say is Penske & Budget.

Lets Talk Moving Company Uk Germany

      without comments

      Lizzie asks…

How do I arrange a move (between UK and Germany)?

I am going to move between two countries (the UK and Germany).

In the past, I was able to pack all my possessions and carry them myself (!), but now, I have a bit more so I will need to use a moving service. Notably, I need the movers to be able to keep my boxes in storage for a while, while I look for accommodation.

What are good companies in the sector, and what should I be careful for? Thanks!

      Dennis Carter answers:

Using a normal moving service would probably cost you an awful lot. Hiring a van one way is also complicated, as most companies do not allow one way rentals from Britain to continental Europe (as the steering wheel is reversed). I recommend you pack your things well and ship them by pallet with a logistics company. I once moved a lot of things from Ireland to Germany using a company called Optimax, and I was completely satisfied. I paid about €330 incl. VAT for one pallet from Ireland to Germany, with door to door service (and it could be cheaper from the UK, no idea). Some of my boxes had been opened, but I think that was due to customs. My girlfriend used the same service for the same stretch and was also happy with the result, though she paid somewhat less (no idea why, I think they simply raised their prices a while back). It helps if you can speak German when you phone them. The website is attached–just phone the person responsible for the UK.

      Nancy asks…

Hi, Is google checkout safe to ship a car from Germany to UK as the as private seller claims to me?

Hi, I found a ridiculous half price car for sale advertised in UK Gumtree, its 2009, 28,000 miles, with a 1 year warranty left. Now, this guy used to live in the UK, but he moved to Germany as he works there as a construction engineer he claimed! the car has all its papers and registered UK plate when he first bought it new, he uploaded all photos to see. He is desperate to sell it at a half price because of his work situation he admits! The car is already at a shipping company sealed with all its papers and ready to be delivered to me if i agree to give him my full name and shipping address via Google checkout to the start the transaction. He said, i don’t have to send him any money in advance and i have 7 days RETURN POLICY to check the car to a mechanic, test and take it to a approved dealer once i receive it, and if i did not like it within this period, i can return it back and he will have to take it back on his EXPENSE, he claimed!! He added that Google will hold my money in their account, until the car is delivered to me, with properly executed titles.(not sure about that). The other thing is, he is NOT stating his Telephone number in the Gumtree add, reply by email only. but at the end of his replies, he is writing his own German address to make him look genuine to buyers. (not sure if its fake address). So, i really don’t know whether if can proceed with the transaction or not, and i really like the car, its a bargain! any advice please? thank you.

      Dennis Carter answers:

Saounds like the Western Union Scam all over again. Gumtree is littered with Scam adverts

Tel him you’ll come out to Germany and collect it in person and bring the cash with you! See what his reaction is to that lol

      Chris asks…

Are there companies to help me import my car to the UK?

We have just moved from Germany to the UK and brought our car with us. It is still registered and insured in Germany, but I know that we will have to import it / register it here. I had a look on the DVLA website and it looks like it is a pretty complicated process.
Do you know whether there are companies or agents that could help me or do everything for me?

      Thank you for your help!

      Dennis Carter answers:

I did this a few years ago. It’s not as difficult as it looks, just take all your documentation to the local DVLA office and they’ll help. Before you hand over any paperwork make sure you keep copies in case the originals get lost. When your new registration is returned check it carefully for errors – they get about 1 in 10 wrong, allegedly, certainly did with my brothers’ last month.

      Sharon asks…

whats the requirement to move to germany?

i want to move to Germany after i finish college what is the process to move to Germany if i was born in America do i need to speak German too? and i have a cell phone from the USA from Mobilee can i switch my Tmobile USA account to the UK account with out paying 200$ early termination fee since its the same company in different country?

      Dennis Carter answers:

Like every other EU country you need to get a job offer first from a registered company in Germany, and then you MIGHT get a work/residency permit – if they can’t find an EU national to do your job, which is highly unlikely. And all this you have to do from the US. Right now it’s pretty much impossible for a US national to get work anywhere in the EU.

I think your mobile phone is the least of your worries, dear. Hold onto it for now, don’t organise that contract termination just yet.

      Sandy asks…

Moving to Australia or Argentina or a European Country?

I have looked into moving aboard and lived in Europe for a short duration of time. Europe tends to be more expensive to live so I am considering Australia or Argentina. I do not have any money saved up for the big move. Working two jobs now to make the bills and save a little bit. I have been accepted into the MSC information and library science programme at Charles Sturt University in Australia.
Any suggestions of what is the best country that offers good employment opportunities for migrants and healthly living. I think I should maybe forget about Europe because I am not a EU citizen and also the cost to live is very high. Have considered the UK, Switzerland or Germany to relocated. I know some spanish, french, swedish and german. The US have not treated me fairly with some situations I have had. I been ripped off and lied to by corporations. Also, told to go back where I came from from a branch manager at a large US company.

      Dennis Carter answers:

I live in Australia, its gaining on the US expensive-wise. HUGE opportunities for employment over here at the moment. Mining companies need blue and white collar workers in regional WA and are paying $100,000 plus to get them! My family is moving to Newman (WA) at the end of the year to take advantage! There is a housing shortage though so you will need half a mil to buy a house or $300 a week for rent.

      Sandra asks…

I have been approached by an Aquaintence from Taiwan, who represents a food company?

They are considering entering European market should such a move prove profitable (medium-long term). Their cash cow is frozen foods, and understandably want to expand from there local market. The European country they which to enter is either; UK, France or Germany.

The work they need to undertake includes all that you would expect, ie, Market Analysis, Distribution channel identification, Competitor analysis, legal assistance etc.

Does anyone know of a market research company and consultancy that provides assistance in this domain?

      Dennis Carter answers:

There are quite a few large food companies in Taiwan exporting products outside Asia. I am doubting your acquaintance really representing one of them. Frozen food is even ridiculous to be an export. No food except dried can take the shipment of 2-3 months by sea, since it is obvious by air is unprofitable in the case of common food. In addition, the most acquainted market for Taiwanese food companies is North America. They should have established their channels there already, and been expertising on trans-continental trade. I am curious why those presumable experts asked your help to find an answer on Yahoo Answers.

It is probably a joke, or a scam.

      Jenny asks…

My work contract ends whilst Im on maternity leave?

My contract is ending in september and I don’t think it will get renewed will I still get my SMP from the company. Company relocation to mauritius. is this good?

a supplier of car components (they also manufacturer of car seats) located in the uk midlands is planning to relocate to mauritius for reasons to do with the cost of production.

they have a market in europe; countries like spain, italy and germany buy their manufactured goods.
the company supplies car components to volkswagen, the psa group (peugeot and citreon), and fiat.

is mauritius a good country to move to, for cost reasons; shipping to the market place should be considered?

      support your opinion with reasons.

      Dennis Carter answers:

Hard to explain. A lot of companies set up headquarters there for their indain ocean branches. I think 80% of all wool products come from mauritius(someone told someone i know this so this might not be accurate)…… Microsoft, NIKE…PUMA..they are all there. Second highest GDP (i think those are the right letters…a bit of insomnia…..but my typing is starting to go) in Africa

Its like on the line between 3rd world and modern. Definatly cheaper to produce stuff.

My parents are from there and i’ve been there tons of times. The towns are sorta backwater, but the cities are cities.

You can do the near sweat shop wages for labor.
My dad basically owns a dollar store there..he exports from america and it makes money after the exporting fees.

I forgot exactly…my dad had an issue with the import / export taxes and was fighting them for a bit……but i think exporting from mauritus is pretty cheap.

Also…20,000$ american dollars a year is a decent upper middle class lifestyle there.
